Marino gets Ganassi chance for Rolex 24
Marino Franchitti is no stranger to running prototypes at the front of the pack but now the popular Scotsman will have the opportunity to challenge for the win aboard a Daytona Prototype at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Franchitti will drive for Chip Ganassi Racing alongside the team’s Target IndyCar duo Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan; plus Ganassi’s new NASCAR young star Kyle Larsen aboard the No.2 Ford-powered Riley.
“This is a race I really love and one that I want to win. The Target team and Chip Ganassi have a way of winning these big races. That’s why they’re here for and it is good to be a part of that,” Franchitti said.
“It is certainly as good a chance as I’ve ever had to win this race.
“The race is double the length of any race we do and relatively you have a lot of cars for a short track so traffic is a real issue. There is also massive differences in the level of driver experience – there are so many challenges as a driver.
“With the amalgamation of the two series you don’t know what car is going to be stronger over 24 hours. We’ll all be sitting down on Sunday afternoon and might be surprised as to which car has won.”
The team’s main TUDOR series entry will be driven by regulars co-drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas with Jamie McMurray and Indy Lights star, Sage Karam.
Ganassi and co-owner Felix Sabates has five wins and two second-place finishes at the Rolex 24 from 2006 to 2013 and are the only team owners in history to win three-straight Rolex 24 At Daytona events (2006-2008).
