Magnussen scores Long Beach pole

April 8, 2017

Fresh from taking victory at Sebring last month, Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen charged to the pole position on the streets of Long Beach today in round three of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Magnussen stopped the clocks at a record setting 1:16.909 seconds to claim the pole with the eight running GTLM cars split by a remarkable .578 of a second.

Missing from the qualifying action was the No.911 which suffered impact with the wall at the end of the main straight in the previous practice session.

During qualifying itself the Risi Ferrari of Toni Vilander also spun and hit the wall while the Ford GT of Richard Westbrook ran wide and tore off the rear wing on a tire wall.

Joey Hand’s Ford was second fastest with Vilander able to claim third despite his spin.

The pole was Magnussen’s first since VIR last year and repeats his 2014 performance here at Long Beach in the GTLM class. Magnussen and teammate Antonio Garcia went on to win here that year.

“Qualifying here is a fantastic experience. I love this place. It’s one of my favorite tracks,” Magnussen said.

“Qualifying at any street circuit is always special. You can get so close to the walls… as long as you bring it back fastest you can scrape it a little bit! The Corvette was good. We had a good session just prior to qualifying where we did a simulation where we found a couple of areas where we could change a little bit.

“Those were good changes and allowed us to find what we needed.”

Magnussen also scored pole and won the race here with Johnny O’Connell in the old GT1 class in 2008.

Other class pole positions went to Ricky Taylor in Prototypes and Bryan Sellers in GT Daytona.

Tomorrow’s Bubba Burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and can be seen live in the US on FOX.
