Leaping Lizards! Holzer on pole

August 17, 2012

Flying Lizard Motorsports’ Marco Holzer stunned the GT field by stealing pole position at Road America today – earning the first pole both for himself and the #44 Lizard Porsche.

Even better, the result gave Flying Lizard Motorsports their first ever 1-2 in qualifying.

Holzer held off teammate Joerg Bergmeister by a mere .013 of a second at the circuit where the Porsche wasn’t expected to shine.

Tomorrow’s four hour race will also be the first time that team owner Seth Neiman will have the chance to drive the pole winning car.

The Californian squad has shown stunning form in recent weeks with a win at Lime Rock, a victory that was taken away following a post-race technical issue at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and a second place at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“It was an unbelievable day for me. The car was fantastic,” Holzer said.

“It was a tough quali because on each lap, after I had crossed start/finish, they radioed that I had P1, then ten seconds later that Joerg had overtaken and I was now P2. For four laps we both pushed hard and kept alternating for P1.

“On the last lap, I nearly went off, I was so over the limit, but I made it for the fast time. I’m looking forward to the race tomorrow; Road America is my favorite track in the U.S. and has everything you could want as a driver.”

Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin took third spot ahead of BMW’s Bill Auberlen.

The first seven GT cars were under the existing lap record and were covered by a mere 6/10ths of a second.
