Race start

The Audi v Peugeot battle continues to be a highlight at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans with the diesel prototypes from Germany and France evenly matched after four hours.

Marcel Fassler’s Audi headed the pack with a trio of Peugeots chasing with Anthony Davison, Simon Pagenaud and Stephane Sarrazin behind the wheel.

Audi’s attack took a hit after the first hour when Allan McNish crashed heavily – heavily damaging the crash fence and causing a long safety car period. McNish was able to walk away but did head to hospital for precautionary checks.

Dominik Kraihamer’s Oreca headed the LMP2 pack with last year’s winner Danny Watts giving chase in the Strakka HPD.

In the GT PRO ranks Jan Magnussen headed the pack while still awaiting the birth of his third child. The Dane’s wife Christina’s due date is actually this weekend.

Michael Wainwright led the GTE Am class in the Gulf AMR Vantage.
