Peugeot had its turn at the front of the pack with reigning American Le Mans Series champ Simon Pagenaud taking the lead as the four leading diesel prototypes cycled through their pit stop strategies.
Pagenaud lead teammate Alex Wurz with the sole remaining Audi in third with Benoit Treluyer behind the wheel.
Drama hit the Corvette camp when Jan Magnusseen spun out the GTE Pro class lead exiting the Porsche Curves and collected the #63 Proton Competition Porsche.
The second Chevy also struck trouble when delayed after contact with the tire barrier exiting Arnage. Toni Villander’s Ferrari leads for AF Corse.
