Joey Hand tops prototype times
Joey Hand may have been a part time guy in the US sportscar scene in recent years as he did battle with the touring car greats in the DTM in Germany but the Californian wasted no time getting up to speed at Daytona today.
Hand was second fastest in the morning for Chip Ganassi Racing and went one better in the afternoon to set the fastest time and mark the No.01 Ford EcoBoost-powered machine as the car to watch at the “Roar before the 24” at Daytona International Speedway.
The No.02 Riley Ford was fastest in the morning with Scott Dixon at the wheel while afternoon session featured three different types of car at the front of the field.
Hand’s Daytona Prototype stopped the clocks at 1:39.397, just ahead of the Le Mans-style P2 prototype of Oswaldo Negri Jr. in the Michael Shank Racing Ligier entry. The narrow-nosed DeltaWing was third fastest at 1:39.536. A mere .139 of a second separated the top three.
