Joey Hand returns to his home track

Drivers love Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but Ford Chip Ganassi Racing star Joey Hand loves it for more than just it’s thrilling turns and fantastic fans.

For the Sacramento native, the Northern California track lets him be at home.

Just three hours from Sacramento, Laguna Seca is the closest Hand gets to a home race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The short driving time means his friends and family have no excuse not to come watch the reigning Daytona 24 champ do what he does best on one of California’s most famous courses.

But, Hand doesn’t mind the boost that comes with having friends and family around.

“I think there’s something to be said for home track advantage for all sports,” Hand said.

“For sure, for me, Laguna Seca is my home track.

“It’s good to have my wife and kids there and the last time they were there, we won [Road America].”

Though Hand doesn’t think they’ll need it to get a good result for the No. 66 Ford GT.

“As a team, historically, we’ve had good cars at Laguna.

“Last year we had a strong car and so far every track we’ve gone to this year, we’ve had a better car than we had there last year.”
