Porsche GT Team’s second year with the new 911 RSR car has already proven a marked improvement over year one. The CORE autosport-supported Porsche program is in prime IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship title contention in all three of the driver, team and manufacturer categories.

The Rolex 24 at Daytona kicked off the season with a tough result. But Porsche’s new 911 secured its first major endurance race victory at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

The win was particularly sweet for full-season drivers Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilet in their No. 911 car, as it “completed the set” of wins they’ve achieved together with Porsche at Daytona, Sebring and Petit Le Mans.

Tandy is also an overall winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015. They shared the winning car at Sebring with Fred Makowiecki.

Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor have embraced the spotlight in the sister No. 912 Porsche at Long Beach and Mid-Ohio.

In Long Beach, the No. 912 car looked poised to capture first the pole, then the race win. However, neither came good. Joey Hand pipped Vanthoor for pole at the end of qualifying. Then after Vanthoor led most of the race, Bamber had to retire with a broken suspension.

The missed opportunity there was quickly erased at Mid-Ohio as the No. 912 car got back in front to score the win. Vanthoor withstood late-race pressure from BMW’s Connor De Phillippi to bring home the victory, Porsche’s second of the year.

Outside of IMSA competition in Porsche’s yearlong 70 years of sports cars celebration, Vanthoor scored pole and Tandy, Pilet, Makowiecki and Richard Lietz the win in a Manthey Racing-supported No. 912 Porsche 911 GT3 R at the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring.

Porsche was the last manufacturer besides Corvette to win the IMSA GTLM championship. The manufacturer has positioned itself nicely to regain that crown later this year.
