IMSA season-to-date: Ford

May 16, 2018

Ford Chip Ganassi Racing maintains slim leads in the driver and team standings of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans class through four races. Ford meanwhile tails Porsche by just one point in the manufacturer’s standings.

At the break before the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ford team has alternated great races with tough ones.

The team delivered a crushing 1-2 performance in the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona. Fords led all but nine of 783 laps in the 24-hour race. Ryan Briscoe, Richard Westbrook and Scott Dixon shared the winning car.

But they fell off the podium at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, with the No. 66 Ford GT delayed in an incident and the No. 67 Ford unable to parlay strategy to its advantage there either.

Ford bounced back with the pole and a pair of podiums on the streets of Long Beach.

But Mid-Ohio proved difficult, again with the No. 67 Ford ending just off the podium despite posting the fastest race lap and moving forward into podium contention again on strategy.

The Ford GT program has ticked many boxes in its two-plus years racing in both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship. A championship victory is one of the few remaining outstanding ones.

The start to this year has positioned Ford nicely to try to check that box. Either the points-leading pair of Briscoe and Westbrook, or the duo of Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller has a good shot.

All four Ford GTs between IMSA and the FIA WEC race together at Le Mans next month.
