IMSA season-to-date: Corvette

May 21, 2018

Although the Corvette C7.R is the oldest car in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans class, it’s still a consistent race winner and contender.

Corvette Racing has one win and one pole thus far during its 20th season of competition. The pole came via Jan Magnussen at Daytona and the win by Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner in Long Beach.

Corvette’s consistently excellent pit work has carried over into the 2018 season. It’s enabled the team to score finishes higher up than they may have otherwise been on out-and-out pace.

An example of that came last race at Mid-Ohio. Magnussen and Antonio Garcia rebounded from two tough races in Sebring and Long Beach to finish third.

The tight nature of the GTLM field means it is anyone’s game in the driver, team and manufacturer standings. After the Le Mans break, the GTLM class races five times in eight weeks. That comes after racing only four times in five months to start the year!

Both pairs of Corvette drivers sit tied for fourth in the championship standings. They sit just 10 points behind the leading Ford pair of Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook.

Corvette is even closer to the front in the manufacturer’s championship, only three points behind Porsche.
