Michelin technical team leader Karl Koenigstein and Muscle Milk team owner Greg Pickett plot tire strategy prior to the race
The low grip surface at MRLS typically finds teams looking for extra grip, especially in the early stages of the race. Soft tires are often the preferred option, but teams can run the risk of increased tire wear. Double-stinting soft tires is rarely an option.
Having successfully introduced the latest generation Michelin “street soft” tires in their victory at Long Beach, the Muscle Milk team evaluated both the grip level and tire wear in practice at Monterey. They liked what they found.
In the race, the Muscle Milk team was not only able to use the Michelin street soft tires to produce the lap times they desired, but also to double-stint them all race long. The team used just three sets of Michelin street soft tires in the entire six-hour race.
