Honda, BMW set the pace in first practice

BMW-24-1400Oswaldo Negri put Michael Shank Racing’s Honda-powered Ligier JS P2 at the head of the Prototype class in the first practice session for Sunday’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Monterey Grand Prix. Negri lapped the roller-coaster 2.2-mile Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca course in 1:20.077 (100.613 mph) to take the top spot.

Negri-1400The Corvette DPs of Richard Westbrook and Jordan Taylor were second and third respectively in the Prototype category.

There was no lack of variety at the top of the time chart with the Scott Pruett running the fourth quickest lap in Ganassi Racing’s Ford EcoBoost Riley.

Dirk Werner was the top gun in GT Le Mans, running the quickest lap in the category in BMW Team RLL’s No. 25 BMW Z4.

Fresh from a victory on the streets of Long Beach, Werner edged the Corvette C7.R of Antonio Garcia by less than three hundredths of a second. The second Team RLL BMW driven by John Edwards was third quickest in the GTLM class.

Bruno Junqueira set the pace in the Prototype Challenge category with RSR Racing’s Oreca FLM09, and Andy Lally was the quickest in GT Daytona with Magnus Racing’s Porsche 911 GT America.

Conditions were ideal on the Central California coast, with brilliant sunshine, air temperature in the low 70s, and track temperature at 100 degrees at the conclusion of the session.

The second practice session for the fourth round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship will get underway at 3:30 p.m. local time.
