GT Le Mans class to run 50th race since merger at Lime Rock

July 21, 2018

Today’s Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park (4 p.m. ET, FS1) sees a milestone in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition.

The GT Le Mans class will run its 50th race since the 2014 merger that brought together the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM Rolex Series.

GT racing in North American sports car racing has long had a number of different classes. But the GTLM class – formerly just the GT class in the ALMS days – has always stood for manufacturer prominence and unparalleled variety.

All current GTLM manufacturers have selected Michelin as their tire technical partner in the only IMSA class that features open tire competition.

Michelin has won all but two races in this time period, including a notable overall win at the 2015 Petit Le Mans with Porsche when the GT cars beat all the Prototypes.

Chevrolet Corvette has won the most races in class over this time period. Corvette has won 16 of the first 49 for a winning percentage just less than 33 percent. All of those have come with the C7.R, introduced in 2014. But the wins have been spread across the field so that no one manufacturer has ever enjoyed too long a period atop the charts.

Corvette’s Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia have 10 wins, most in class in this time period (most recent at VIR, 2017, left). As the defending champions are yet to win in 2018, they are looking to join Porsche’s Patrick Pilet as the only drivers to win a race in GTLM each season.

Ford and Porsche are tied with 12 poles apiece to lead that chart. Magnussen and Nick Tandy, Pilet’s longtime teammate, lead the driver pole chart in GTLM with five each.

There have been 25 different pole winning drivers and 36 different race winning drivers.
