Good Afternoon at Le Mans

June 3, 2012

Oliver Gavin, shown here at Long Beach, continued Corvette Racing's recent momentum with top time of the afternoon in GT.

It was a good afternoon for Corvette Racing as Oliver Gavin led the GT time sheet while Audi’s Allan McNish paced the afternoon session at today’s Le Mans official test day with a lap at 3:25.9, just three/tenths of a second off last year’s pole time. McNish, later had an off that ended his session aboard the n.2 Audi e-tron Quattro.

Marcel Fassler was second quickest aboard the n.1 Audi e-tron Quattro while super-sub Marc Gene, filling in for Timo Bernhard, posted third in the Auid R18 Ultra.

Alex Wurz and Anthony Davison followed closely in the new Toyota TS030 hybrid prototypes. All are Michelin technical partner teams.

One of the highlights for Audi was the ability to run 12 lap stints after being able to achieve just 11 lap stints of the 8.462 mile circuit in its 2011 victory here.

Toyota showed both speed and fight throughout the day, the first together on track with Audi. While Davison reported his Toyota was focused on speed, Wurz said the primary objective is to finish.

Moving to the top of the GTE-Pro board was the n.74 Corvette driven by Oliver Gavin. Gavin led the Ferraris of Frank Makowiecki and Gianmaria Bruni. All are Michelin technical partner teams.

Continuing on a solid day, the Nissan DeltaWing saw Marino Franchitti at the wheel for most of the afternoon session, matching times from the morning on a successful day for the Highcroft Racing entry.

Adding to the day, World Rally Championship leader and racing legend, Sebastien Loeb posted the fifth best time of the 23 cars in class at today’s test day. Loeb’s team was the only P2 runner on Michelin tires. Not granted an entry for 2012, Loeb took the invitation to the test day to provide his fledgling P2 team valuable track time in its bid to gain an entry for the 2013 race.
