While the pair of Audi machines look set to fight out the overall win between them with 1 hour remaing, in the GT class there are a group of engineers working away with laptops, calculators and strategically planned “guesswork” which will decide the victor.
The two BMWs hold the lead at the 60th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, but both cars will need to make one more pit stop.
Ex-Corvette driver Olivier Beretta is third in the AF Corse Ferrari and doesn’t have to pit. Behind him is two Corvette drivers with Jan Magnussen leading Oliver Gavin.
Beretta obviously has huge motivation to put one back over his old team – if this race comes down to the wire, you could see the widest Ferrari in history holding off the pair of ‘Vettes.
Jan Magnussen exited the pits after the last round of pit stops in the lead despite originally selecting reverse gear as he tried to leave. Beretta however, sliced his way past on the out lap.
Joey Hand now holds lead of just over a minute for BMW – but will it be enough to keep the lead after his stop?
We’ve seen classic GT finishes here at Sebring before – it will be a fine line between tears and champagne.
