Gavin takes fourth crown in huge ‘Vette day

Oliver Gavin charged to his fourth American Le Mans Series championship today at Virginia International Raceway in a huge day of championship success for Corvette Racing.

Gavin and teammate Tommy Milner earned the driver’s title and Corvette earned the team’s and manufacturer’s titles with a dominant win in the championship’s first visit to VIR.

“This year with Tommy, it’s gelled and we’ve become a great team,” Gavin said.

“You can have these great runs in seasons, and you can string the podiums together, but this is our fourth win this year. I can name so many people within the team that did a fantastic job, but it was all of them, it’s been a real team effort.

“It didn’t come down to one person, it was all of the bits of the jigsaw puzzle. For me, my 100th race, to win the race and win the championships, driver’s, team, and manufacturer, I don’t think there is anything else I could have done today.”

While Gavin was able to dodge the bullet in a turn one melee on the opening lap. Teammate Jan Magnussen wasn’t so lucky – suffering heavy damage to the front of the No.3 Corvette.

Magnussen and teammate Antonio Garcia sit second in the driver’s championship going into the final race at Petit Le Mans.

“I was hoping things would go well for us, being my 100th start. When I managed to get through the melee in turn one, I thought this could very well be our day.

“Things have worked out for us today, but you know, we’ve worked at it. We made our own luck. We clambered and put our self in the right position. We executed that four times this year, that’s why we won the championship.”
