Gavin, Milner go for ‘double double’ at Mid-Ohio

Long Beach marked a special win for Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner of Corvette Racing in Round 3 of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The longtime pairing won six years to the day of their first win at co-drivers, at the same venue, in 2012. Gavin, meanwhile, won his 50th race with Corvette Racing in his and the team’s illustrious sports car racing career.

This weekend at Mid-Ohio, they’ve got a chance to double up… twice. How so, you ask?

Gavin and Milner aren’t just going for two wins in a row this season. They’re also going for two wins in a row at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, albeit six years apart.

The last time the American Le Mans Series raced at Mid-Ohio was in 2012, and Gavin and Milner won that race too. The Long Beach and Mid-Ohio wins were two of their four wins (Monterey, VIR) they scored that season en route to the ALMS GT class championship.

Before Mid-Ohio, let’s take one more opportunity to look back on Long Beach. Gavin took time there to reflect on 50 wins with Corvette Racing.

“There was that last lap, last corner, ‘heart in mouth moment,” Gavin said. “It seems the last lap, last corner for us is a bit of a ‘thing.’ But I’m glad we have got through that and got a victory.

“It’s a great victory for me. Win number 50 is pretty spectacular. In our 20th season, to get our first win here at Long Beach, we have some sort of magic ingredient – I’m not sure what it is. But it’s with the team, and executing, going from fifth to second in the pit lane. Those guys do an amazing job. Hopefully we keep the momentum going for Mid-Ohio.”

Milner noted how important Gavin has been to his own career development, since their first year as co-drivers in 2012.

“It’s really special for me, because Oliver has been such a huge part of my career at Corvette Racing since 2012 as a teammate,” he said. “It’s really cool to be with him on a big milestone like 50. He kept it clean.

“That was a classic Corvette Racing kind of win. It was really special to be in the car. I didn’t know it was his 50th at the time, but like I said, it’s more about him than anything.”

The Long Beach win moved Gavin and Milner into second place in GT Le Mans class points, just seven behind the leading Ford GT pair.

Teammates Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen are fifth in points. They’ve have had a pair of races off the podium since Magnussen scored the pole and the pair finished third at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Corvette Racing has eight prior Mid-Ohio race wins, and either pair will look to add to that this weekend.

But if Gavin and Milner can pull off the repeat, it will mark that “double double.” Their most recent back-to-back wins came in 2016, which were also special results.

They won Corvette Racing’s 100th victory at Lime Rock Park, then two weeks later Milner produced his incredible fifth-to-first run in the final few laps at Road America.
