Gavin excited about new ‘Vette
Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin may have been a regular at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in recent years but for 2014, the Brit is eagerly awaiting the chance to do battle in the same car that he’ll contest the entire championship in.
Corvette Racing will race at the Rolex 24 at Daytona for the first time this year since 2001 – the year they actually won the race overall with Ron Fellows, Johnny O’Connell, Franck Freon and Chris Kneifel.
Thirteen years later the Corvette Racing team is still doing a lot of winning – in fact taking the past two ALMS GT championships. Gavin and Tommy Milner took the driver’s crown in 2012 while Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia were successful last year.
The 2013 season was the perfect send off for the Corvette C6.R. For 2014, the Corvette squad will debut the all-new C7.R Stingray – and Gavin can’t wait for the green flag at the Rolex 24.
“I’m looking forward to it immensely. This will be the first time I’ve come here to compete at Daytona and have it actually be part of the championship I am competing in,” Gavin said.
“There is a lot riding on the weekend. It is the biggest race in the US and it is the first race for the C7.R. It is going to be amazing to be here with Corvette Racing. The team haven’t raced here since 2001 when they won and that was just before I joined the team.
“There is romance and mystique about Corvette Racing coming back here – it is certainly very exciting.”
Gavin will again team up with Milner in 2014 with Robin Liddell joining for the endurance races. Ryan Briscoe will join forces as the third driver in the No.4 car alongside Magnussen and Garcia.
