Garcia posts 49.7-second lap for Lime Rock pole

July 21, 2018

Antonio Garcia set a new track record en route to becoming the seventh different GT Le Mans class polesitter in as many IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races this season.

The driver of the No. 3 Corvette C7.R blitzed the 1.5-mile Lime Rock Park road course with a new best lap of 49.754 seconds.

It marks Garcia’s first pole position since Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in 2016, and his third in GTLM.

Garcia will share the car with Jan Magnussen. Magnussen won the pole for the season opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, which was Corvette’s most recent pole.

Under sunny skies and ambient and track temperatures in the low 80s, seven of the eight GTLM class competitors surpassed last year’s pole time. Gianmaria Bruni won the pole for Porsche last year at 50.404 seconds.

Garcia, Laurens Vanthoor in the No. 912 Porsche and Dirk Mueller in the No. 66 Ford were in the 49-second bracket.

A consistent Tommy Milner posted several laps in the 50.0 bracket in the No. 4 Corvette. Milner will roll off the same as his car number in fourth, and shares his car with Oliver Gavin. They won Corvette Racing’s 100th race as a team here two years ago. Either they or the No. 3 car seek Corvette’s 100th race win in North America this weekend.

BMW was within half a second of pole position but that left the best of the two M8 GTEs in sixth and seventh.

All four Michelin technical partner teams are vying for the victory in the 50th GTLM class race since the 2014 IMSA merger that brought sports car racing under one unified banner.

In GT Daytona, Patrick Long scored the pole position for Wright Motorsports in the No. 58 Porsche 911 GT3 R. Long shares that car with two-time defending GTD class champion Christina Nielsen.

The top eight of 10 cars in that class, featuring seven manufacturers, were covered by just 0.498 of a second.

WeatherTech Championship action resumes later today with the race at 3:10 p.m. ET. Radio coverage is live on IMSA Radio, with slightly delayed TV coverage at 4 p.m. ET on FS1.
