Formula E Punta del Este preview

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship hits the halfway point (Round 6) of its fourth season this weekend. The series is back in Uruguay for the Punta del Este E-Prix.

Punta del Este was a popular location in seasons one and two, with Sebastien Buemi of Renault e.dams winning both events.

Buemi hasn’t won yet this season, but has captured three straight podium finishes. Alas, the season two champion isn’t quite in the championship picture this year.

Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne has five top-five finishes in the first five events, and leads the standings with 81 points.

Vergne holds a 12-point edge (81-69) over Felix Rosenqvist, with the Swede looking to rebound after a disastrous race in Mexico City. He scored his second pole of the season but had his Mahindra seize up prior to the first pit stop, and he finished 19th.

Sam Bird of DS Virgin Racing sits third in points with 61, and Buemi is fourth on 52. Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Nelson Piquet Jr. is fifth in points with four top-five results.

Bird, Rosenqvist, Vergne and Daniel Abt have won the five races so far. Abt finally secured his and Audi Sport’s first Formula E wins in Mexico City last time out.

The team’s championship is a bit tighter. Techeetah leads Mahindra 99-90 there, with Jaguar third and DS Virgin fourth.
