Formula E Paris preview
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship heads to Paris to this weekend’s Paris E-Prix, the eighth round of season four.
All eyes are on points leader Jean-Eric Vergne of Techeetah, who will race in his home E-Prix, and will look to hold back the surging Sam Bird of DS Virgin Racing.
Vergne’s utilized a balance of both pace and consistency in the opening seven races. He’s won twice and has top-five finishes in each race.
But Bird’s win last time out in Rome closed the points gap to just 18 points behind Vergne (119-101). Like Vergne, Bird has a pair of wins this year. The difference is that Bird has six top-five finishes while Vergne has all seven.
Another DNF leaves Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist more than one race’s worth of points behind. He’s third, with 82 points, and the last driver with a realistic chance to win this year’s title with four races remaining.
Sebastien Buemi, the season two champion, is fourth in points with 60. He only has half the points as Vergne, so chances are he won’t be able to add a second title to his resume this year.
Buemi won this race last year over Jose Maria Lopez and Nick Heidfeld. Rosenqvist was fourth. Neither Bird nor Vergne scored in this race last year.
There is one change in the field of 20 cars. Ma Qing Hua will replace Luca Filippi at the NIO team this race. Otherwise the field remains as it did a fortnight ago in Rome.
Also of note, Jaguar announced Monday its Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY race car will make its global public debut ahead of Round 9, in Berlin. Panasonic Jaguar Racing heads to Paris this weekend with Nelson Piquet Jr. and Mitch Evans sixth and seventh in points, behind Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Daniel Abt in fifth.
It’s the shortest track of the season, at just over 1.1 miles (1.9 km) and 14 turns.
Qualifying is Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET on FS2, with the race at 9:30 a.m. ET on FS1.
