Ford tops Friday practice at Road America
Ford Chip Ganassi Racing eclipsed a potential BMW Team RLL 1-2 in Friday’s second practice session for this weekend’s IMSA Road Race Showcase.
Dirk Mueller took the No. 66 Ford GT to a best time of 2:03.716 in the second session, which stood as the fastest time of the day.
Mueller and Joey Hand lead the GT Le Mans class points standings by one over the No. 3 Corvette and two over the No. 67 Ford pair heading into this weekend.
Until Mueller set that time, Connor De Phillippi had held the best time of 2:03.795 in his No. 25 BMW M8 GTE. He’ll share that car with Alexander Sims.
The BMW team expects its M8 GTE to better suit the flowing, picturesque 4.048-mile Road America road course in Elkhart Lake, Wis. BMW Team RLL scored its first win together as partners here in 2009. In 2012, BMW kicked off Road America’s run of six different winning marques in GT Le Mans in as many years that spans through 2017.
The second Ford and second BMW were third and fourth. After that, it was the two Porsche 911 RSRs and two Corvette C7.Rs.
Porsche led opening practice with Patrick Pilet at 2:04.082 in the No. 911 car.
Temperatures hovered in the low-80 degree mark ambient and mid-80s to low-90s on track all day.
IMSA releases its 2019 schedules tonight. The next WeatherTech Championship on-track activity is Saturday morning at 8:55 a.m., with third practice.
