Ford on top in final practice

Dirk Mueller and Joey Hand set the fastest time of the final practice session at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the No. 66 Ford GT.

Mueller’s time of 1:22.678 was just 0.093 of a second ahead of the second place runner, the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE driven by Toni Vilander and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Third place in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTLM class went to Bill Auberlen and Alexander Sims in the No. 25 BMW M6 GTLM. The BMW pair currently sits second in the drivers’ championship, just one point ahead of session leaders Mueller and Hand.

However, the BMW drivers have a 16 point deficit to championship leaders Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia, who set the fourth fastest time of Saturday’s practice in the No. 3 Corvette C7.R.

The sister car to the No. 66, the No. 67 Ford GT of Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe set the fifth fastest time of the session, just ahead of the No. 4 C7.R of Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

A pair of Porsche’s filled out the seventh and eighth positions, with the No. 911 911 RSR of Patrick Pilet and Dirk Werner just besting Laurens Vanthoor and Gimmi Bruni in the No. 912 by 0.064 of a second.

The No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM of Martin Tomczyk and John Edwards rounded out the class, just 1.231 seconds behind the first place Ford.

In Prototype, the Taylor brothers continued their championship charge, setting the fastest time in the No. 10 Cadillac DPi while the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 took top honors in GTD.
