He recently scored his first FIA World Endurance Championship pole with Patrick Long but now actor/racer Patrick Dempsey is an FIA WEC winner after taking the GTE-Am class win at Fuji Speedway.

Dempsey teamed with Long and Marco Seefried to score victory aboard their Porsche in the Fuji Speedway rain.

The victory is the first for Dempsey on the world stage who is contesting the FIA WEC for the first time this year after his famous “Grey’s Anatomy” TV character Dr Derek Shepherd was “killed off” in May this year.

After making his Grand-Am ROLEX Series sportscar debut in 2007, Dempsey has been a quick study – following in the footsteps of famous actor/racers Steve McQueen and Paul Newman.

“A great feeling. Our first victory in the WEC – we’ve worked hard for this over the entire season,” Dempsey said.

“I drove a long first stint in pouring rain and then had to wait for hours. When I climbed back into the car shortly before the flag, my main priority was not to make any mistakes.

“But everything came together today. Patrick (Long) gave me advice over the radio, Marco drove a fantastic stint and the team’s strategy was perfect. I’m very grateful for all the support I’ve received from Porsche and the team this season.

“It enables me to keep developing as a driver. This is a great day – and from now on Fuji is one of my favorite race tracks.”

The 49-year-old Dempsey is enjoying an incredible debut season on the world stage. He, Long and Seefried also finished second in class at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours in France.

In the past four races, the Dempsey-Pro Porsche team have been on a roll with second, fourth, fourth and victory in the past four races.

The trio now sit third in the championship standings with two races remaining in China and Bahrain.
