Ferrari drivers Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell triumphed in a GT Daytona class at VIR today in after a race long inter-marque battle with Audi and Aston Martin.
Sweedler passed pole winner Dion von Moltke in the opening stint before handing over to Bell who was able to drive the car home to the checkered flag.
“VIR is one of those tracks I just love. High speed and undulating and it’s perfect for my style of driving,” Bill Sweedler said.
“The car was spot on engineering wise, we were in the sweet spot from day one. It was nice pace immediately. The crew was just flawless all weekend. We knew we had to step up our game coming in. We were 10 points out. If we weren’t on the top step we’d have a tough time chasing these guys over here. It was great all weekend, just flawless.”
Championship leader Christina Nielsen finished second with last year’s GTLM driver’s champion, Kuno Wittmer aboard the Aston Martin V12 Vantage.
“I think that consistency showed that it is the key to win a championship,” the Danish second-generation racer said.
“We were a little tired with finishing second and we’re still looking for the win. I’ll take the championship over a win any day.
“We fought hard, the car was good in the practice sessions. We struggled a bit with it when it got really warm. We were great with our pit stops. there wasn’t anything I would have done differently. “
Pole winners Paul Miller Racing fell out of podium contention after Christopher Haase suffered a late race spin and had to pit to remove grass and debris from the front of the car.
The final podium spot went to Mario Farnbacher and Ian James aboard their Porsche.
