ESM Ferrari Takes GT Thriller

October 20, 2012

Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari capped its breakout ALMS season with an exclamation point, winning the GT class at Petit Le Mans to score the team’s second victory and claim second place in the ALMS GT driver championship for drivers Johannes van Overbeek and team owner Scott Sharp.

Ferrari ace Toni Vilander joined the team here at Road Atlanta and helped deliver the pole and then play the team’s late race fuel strategy to perfection, stretching the last stop for 50 laps to avoid a late race splash and go and earn the class win.

Finishing second in GT after a race long battle was the #3 Crovette Racing car of Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor. The runner-up finish, the fifth in the ten race season ended a 13 year streak with at least one ALMS win for Magnussen.

Taking third and fourth were the BMW Team RLL entries. The final hours of the race saw the GT class leading #4 Corvette of 2012 GT champions Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner fall out and a subsequent caution period reveal three differnet race strategies by the #3 Corvette, the #55 BMW and the #01 Ferrari.

The Flying Lizard Porsches took fifth and seventh places, sandwiching the #17 Porsche.
