Fortunately for the competitors at the seventh round of the 2010 American Le Mans Series season, there were no last-minute accidents at the end of the two-hour Friday test session that put cars on the transporters and out of the race.
Both of the top two in LMP set their fastest laps on their final laps around the 4.048-mile Road America permanent road course. Guy Smith in the No. 16 Dyson Lola Mazda Coupe set the mark at 1:53.090 ahead of Timo Bernhard, making his first start in a Porsche RS Spyder since the last race of 2008, at 1:53.865. Bernhard steps in as injury replacement for Muscle Milk Team CytoSport team owner and co-driver Greg Pickett, and immediately got on the pace in the team’s new tub which has been built in the last two weeks.
The Highcroft HPD ARX 01-c and Drayson Lola Judd Coupe are next up ahead of one of the fastest cars in a straight line, the No. 12 Autocon Lola AER. Autocon’s orange prototype has Johnny Mowlem, Bryan Willman and Tony Burgess behind the wheel this weekend.
In GT, four front-engine cars came to the fore in testing. The two Corvette Racing ZR1s and two Rahal Letterman BMW M3s swept the top four positions, with Oliver Gavin setting the fastest time in the No. 4 at 2:08.856. The two BMWs are next with the No. 3 Corvette and No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche completing the top five.
The four Ferrari F430 GTs are next, the No. 62 Risi entry ahead of the two Extreme Speed entries and the No. 61 Risi car. Extreme Speed’s No. 02 Ferrari F430 GT was the seventh and last car within one second of the leading Corvette, with Guy Cosmo setting a time of 2:09.826.
Kyle Marcelli set the pace in LMPC for Intersport Racing at a 2:02.359, more than a second ahead of the second-placed PR1/Mathiasen car. Marcelli co-drives this weekend with Chapman Ducote, who makes his first ALMS start of the season this weekend.
