Dumas goes for more glory at The Glen
Romain Dumas spent last week scorching Pikes Peak. This week, he’ll try to win again in scorching heat at Watkins Glen.
Dumas set a blistering new record run at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. He drove the specially designed Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak, an electric vehicle running on specially developed Michelin tires. Dumas posted a 7 minute, 57.148 second run, which was a new record by 16 seconds.
Now, after a hiatus, he is back in action this weekend in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition at Watkins Glen International.
Dumas makes his third IMSA start of the year at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.
The Frenchman drives with Jon Bennett and Colin Braun in CORE autosport’s No. 54 Oreca 07 Gibson. They have finished third and fourth in the first two North American Endurance Championship races at Daytona (24 hours) and Sebring (12).
Dumas got off to a good start on Friday by setting the fastest overall time in practice, at 1:33.481.
He also raced with the Porsche GT Team at Le Mans, in one of the CORE-run Porsche 911 RSRs. Dumas shared the No. 94 Porsche with longtime co-driver Timo Bernhard and Sven Mueller.
With two top-five finishes this year in IMSA, they’ll look to scale the rostrum further this weekend and potentially win CORE’s first race in the Prototype class.
While it’s been nearly 10 years since Dumas last raced at Watkins Glen, he relishes the return this weekend.
“The last time and only time I’ve raced at Watkins Glen is in 2009 in a Daytona Prototype. I don’t really remember the track! I was with Timo Bernhard in the Penske Prototype at the time,” he said.
“After Pikes Peak, I’m taking two days off in New York and I’ll be fully recharged and motivated for Watkins Glen. We did quite well in the first two rounds of the TPNAEC, so it’d be nice if we could continue and get a podium!”
