Disaster for DeltaWing
The DeltaWing team faced heartbreak at Daytona nearing the four hour mark after Briton Andy Meyrick was involved in a crash in turn one.
Teammate Katherine Legge had twice taken the car to the front of the pack after the team elected to skip the wet qualifying session.
The No.8 Starworks PC car of Chris Cumming was stranded in the middle of turn one and after several near misses with other cars in the semi-blind and dark corner – Meyrick struck the rear of the stranded machine, causing major damage to the front of the car.
The car has been taken back to the paddock while the team evaluates possible repairs, but the delay will certainly take the unique car out of race-winning contention. A radio problem compounded the issue with Meyrick who was unaware of the stranded car.
Starworks driver Chris Cumming was treated and released from the infield care center but has not been cleared to resume driving.
Prior to the crash, Legge was upbeat but cautious about the team’s chances of success.
“We have a great car but with a great car comes a lot of pressure,” she said.
“We were able to keep the car underneath us and work our way around any traffic. The key to a 24-hour race is getting through the traffic. The DP cars are quite wide in the rear so we’re able to tow up behind them and get a run on them.”
