He went out on top winning his final IndyCar race as well as his final sportscar event but for Gil de Ferran, the future of motorsport looks quite electrifying.

The two-time IndyCar Champion, Indianapolis 500 race winner and American Le Mans Series team owner and race winner has joined the FIA Formula E Championship as an Official Ambassador.

Debuting in September 2014, Formula E is the world’s first fully-electric racing Championship competing in city-centre circuits worldwide.

In addition, de Ferran will also be an official spokesman for Formula E, particularly in North America, where interest in the series remains high following the recent announcement that leading IndyCar outfit Andretti Autosport will field a two-car team and the fact the inaugural calendar will feature races in Los Angeles and Miami.

de Ferran field a team in the American Le Mans Series in 2008 and 2009 as a factory representative for Acura/HPD. Teamed with young Frenchman Simon Pagenaud – the duo were a force to be reckoned with by taking five victories including a farewell to the series win at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at the end of 2009.
