Crazy days in Baltimore

September 1, 2012

The American Le Mans Series P1 championship leader was 24th, their chief rival was 23rd, the overall podium included two P2 cars and a PC entry and six of the top nine cars were GT machines – this wasn’t your average ALMS race on the streets of Baltimore.

Scott Tucker and Christophe Bouchut took the overall win today for Level 5 Motorsport – the team actually taking a 1-2 result with Mexican aces Luis Diaz and Ricardo Gonzalez finishing second.

PC driver’s championship leader Alex Popow made great strides to securing that title by taking the win with Ryan Dalziel for the recently crowned PC team champions CORE autosport.

In the GT ranks, Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers took back-to-back Baltimore wins aboard their Porsche after only qualifying 7th.

Remarkably the P1 race winners Michael Marsal and Eric Lux came back from a first corner crash to take their first P1 victory. The turn 1 incident delayed a number of teams but allowed the likes of Henzler in GT and Popow in PC to grab an early advantage as team’s scrabbled for real estate and many took to the escape road to avoid the carnage.

With only a two hour race, any delay either on track or in the pits had a major impact on anybody’s race.

After being totally dominant in the early part of the event, ALMS title leaders Muscle Milk Pickett Racing suffered a gearbox actuator issue which put them several laps down and the team eventually finished the afternoon with minor contact with the wall.

Chief rivals Dyson Racing may have won the P1 class with their No.20 machine, but the championship-contending No.16 had a number of issues including contact and subsequent extended pit stops to repair body damage which also pushed them down the standings.

Today’s action packed race can be seen tomorrow on ABC from 12:00noon to 2:00pm tomorrow.
