Corvette triumphs in last lap battle

milner (1)Tommy Milner is building a key reputation as Corvette Racing’s “closer”.

Milner and Oliver Gavin became the only pairing to take their second victory of the year today at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

milnerThe reigning GT co-champion from 2012 came under enormous pressure from SRT Motorsports’ Dominik Farnbacher towards the end of the race today with the V10 Viper trying to find a way past the V8 Corvette on the ALMS circuit with the highest average speed on the schedule.

After playing a pivotal role in his Corvette Racing Le Mans debut victory in 2011, Milner is proving to be one tough nut to crack.

“Big fight at the end. I knew from racing here in the past that it’s a tough place to pass,” Milner said.

“If you’re only a couple tenths faster its hard to make a move.  I knew it would be close getting out of the pits in front of the Vipers, but we did. And from there on it was just a case of me focusing forward and on the race ahead. I knew if I didn’t make a mistake and kept the Vipers behind we would be ok. We made some changes over night and the car was perfect.

“After the last yellow it made things even closer. I knew it would be even harder to keep Dominic behind me. On the last lap he was really close and I was being held up by a GTC car. I tried everything I could but I didn’t want to get a penalty. I threw the car into turn 8 and it stuck so we ended up P1. Its good to get back on the podium again.”
