Corvette Racing tops VIR Friday practice
Corvette Racing tops VIR Friday practice
Not one, but both Friday practice sessions went to Corvette Racing at the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR.
The No. 4 C7.R took the top spot in the first session of the all-GT battle at VIRginia International Raceway, with the No. 3 machine topping the sheets in the second practice.
Tommy Milner set the fastest time of the first session, besting Richard Westbrook in the No. 67 Ford GT, who came second.
Third place in the first session went to the No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTE from Risi Competizione.
Risi last raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June and haven’t competed in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship since the series went to Circuit of the Americas in early May.
In the second session, Antonio Garcia took the fastest lap in the No. 3 Corvette by just 0.082 of a second over BMW’s John Edwards.
Ford filled out third and fourth with their No. 66 and 67 GTLM entries, respectively.
VIR has been a happy hunting ground for the velocity yellow Corvettes. Jan Magnussen and
Garcia triumphed here last year while back in 2012 Milner and Oliver Gavin clinched the title in the American Le Mans Series with victory here.
“We can see that everyone is close,” session leader Antonio Garcia said. “A lot of it [setting a fast lap] depends on when you use your tires and your fuel load. That’s the biggest thing.
“The Corvette is running very well. There is still quite a bit of grip here. It’s different from last year; it’s less consistent.
“But everyone is very tight and the race and qualifying should be like that, too. It’s a bit early yet but it’s good to be on the competitive side of things.”
