Corvette Racing Runs for the Triple Crown
American Pharoah made history in thoroughbred racing when he galloped to the first Triple Crown since 1978. Now Corvette Racing has the opportunity to become the first Triple Crown GT class winner in international endurance racing since 2000.
With victories in this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Corvette Racing can complete the GT trifecta with a win in the GTE Pro division at this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. While American Pharoah ran 1.5 miles to clinch horse racing’s Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes, the No. 63 Corvette C7.R driven by Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen, and Ryan Briscoe will have to complete hundreds of laps and cover thousands of miles on the massive 8.47-mile Le Mans circuit to claim its third GT triumph of the year. The trio is backed by Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner, and Jordan Taylor in the No. 64 Corvette C7.R.
“Winning Le Mans in addition to Daytona and Sebring would be really special, Garcia said. “The last time we won here was 2011. We missed winning last year by one position, and we had the pace to win.”
Corvette Racing has a formidable record in the world’s biggest sports car race, posting seven class wins since the team’s debut at the daunting Circuit de la Sarthe in 2000.
“Le Mans is the cornerstone of our program,” explained Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing program manager. “Everything we do throughout the year is to prepare for Le Mans.”
While Corvette Racing will be an odds-on favorite, the two-car team faces fierce competition in the GTE Pro class from factory-backed entries representing Ferrari, Porsche, and Aston Martin.
“The challenge of Le Mans never gets old,” said Jan Magnussen, a 12-year veteran with the team. “Here is where it really matters. Most drivers would give up all their other victories for a win here.”
At 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, sports car racing could celebrate its own Triple Crown winner.
