GT battleground at Road America
The level of competition in the GT class of the American Le Mans Series seems to get more fierce with every weekend.
While Jonathan Bomarito was dominant in qualifying yesterday with a margin of more than 8/10ths of a second – the gaps behind him from second to tenth were covered by another 7/10ths of a second!
In this morning’s warm-up the Risi Competizione Ferrari of Matteo Malucelli and Olivier Beretta clocked the fastest time – despite the fact they were only 10th in qualifying.
Bryce Miller and Wolf Henzler also showed improvement from qualifying to come from fifth and 11th yesterday to be second and third this morning.
Of course it is always hard to know how hard teams are pushing in the warm-up, but one thing is certain – the battle for GT honors today at Road America is going to be tough.
Canadian Tire Motorsport Park winner and reigning co-champion of the GT class Oliver Gavin knows he has a fight on his hands today.
“The rest of the class is very close. You could throw a blanket over all of us,” Gavin said.
“As it always is here, it will be a dogfight for those first couple of hours but then the last half an hour is the critical point.
“You have to make sure you have yourself in the right position and on the right tire otherwise you will really struggle. I’m confident that we have the right car and the right team.”
