After winning team’s championship and the driver’s title for Kuno Wittmer on Saturday at Petit Le Mans, Dodge announced on Monday that the manfuacturer would discontinue its road racing program.

petit_gal_final_ 18Then known as the SRT Viper, the team debuted at Mid Ohio in 2012 and won its first race at Road America 12 months later.

This year the Viper brand earned its first championship success since dominating the early days of the American Le Mans Series in 1999 and 2000.

“Our company has made a business decision to discontinue the SRT Motorsports Dodge Viper GTS-R racing program,” said Ralph Gilles, Senior Vice President of Product Design, Chrysler Group LLC.

“We are very proud of the amazing achievements our fantastic teams, drivers and partners have achieved on track the last few seasons. We thank them for their hard work, effort and commitment to SRT Motorsports. It’s been an honor to be a part of the inaugural IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season and we wish them every success in the future.”

Third place for Kuno Wittmer, Marc Goosens and Ryan Hunter-Reay was enough for Wittmer to clinch the driver’s championship at Road Atlanta. The Dodge Viper squad elected to split the driver pairing of Wittmer and Jonathan Bomarito at the final round to double their chances of success.

“We are saddened by the news of the discontinuation of the SRT Motorsports team,” said Chris Baker, director of motorsport, Michelin North America.

“We enjoyed working with the entire team and being part of their 2014 Team and Driver championships.”
