Classic Lime Rock Battle

July 7, 2012

The Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park gave race fans at the Connecticut venue plenty to cheer about today including a remarkable overall victory by Muscle Milk Pickett Racing.

After a electronics glitch early in the race, Lucas Luhr fell four laps behind the Dyson Racing entry and was seemingly out of contention for the win.

However, with a stunning series of qualifying-like laps and brilliant strategy from the pit stand, the team not only got back onto the lead lap but raced their way into the P1 lead and then had to chase down the two P2 cars which had actually made their way through to the overall lead.

The victory was Muscle Milk Pickett Racing’s second Lime Rock victory and their third in a row in 2012.

In the P2 class, Dempsey Racing scored its first podium in American Le Mans Series competition with Patrick Dempsey and Joe Foster finishing third for the first time. Scott Tucker took the victory in P2 with Christophe Bouchut with Conquest Racing’s David Heinemeier Hansson and Martin Plowman taking second.

In the PC class, CORE autosport continued its incredible 2012 form taking its first 1-2 finish of the season and their fourth victory of the season. The reigning PC class champions are undefeated so far in 2012.

Colin Braun and team owner Jon Bennett took their second consecutive win with points leader Alex Popow and recent 24 Hours of Le Mans P2 winner Tom Kimber-Smith taking second.

In the GT battle, Flying Lizard Motorsports charged back into victory lane to give Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long plenty to celebrate. It was the team’s first win of 2012 and Bergmeister’s sixth win at Lime Rock in seven years.

The tall German ace also celebrated his 100th race with a win. Fellow centurion Jan Magnussen teamed with Antonio Garcia to grab a 2-3 finish for Corvette Racing.
