Cameron in Risi Ferrari for Long Beach
Young star Dane Cameron has been recruited by Risi Competizione to drive alongside ex-Formula 1 race winner Giancarlo Fisichella at this week’s Long Beach Grand Prix.
The only full-time Ferrari GTLM entrant, Risi Competizione has had the most extraordinary and unfortunate of starts to its 2014 season. The Houston-based team now though plans to re-set back to zero, put the incidents and accidents of Daytona and Sebring firmly behind it, and start the season afresh.
Cameron drove at Daytona and Sebring with Turner Motorsport in the GT Daytona class but is able to fill the role at Long Beach with Risi with the GT Daytona class not on the schedule this weekend.
“I am so excited to be racing with Risi Competizione at Long Beach,” Cameron said.
“The red #62 Ferrari is such an iconic car, one that every driver dreams of an opportunity to race. Giuseppe Risi runs a first class team that has been pushing forward despite a really difficult time recently. It will be very cool to share a car with Giancarlo Fisichella and learn from his experience in the F458 Italia GTLM.
“I can’t thank Mr Risi and his team enough for having the confidence to bring me into the team at the last minute for this event. I can’t wait for the weekend to start!”
Cameron excelled last year in the Daytona Prototype class for Team Sahlens, scoring pole at Road America and dominating the early stages of the race. He also teamed with Michael Guasch in the later stages of the 2013 ALMS PC championship season to push Guasch to a championship win.
“I’m delighted to welcome Dane to Risi,” team boss, Giuseppe Risi said.
“He’s a talented young man and has been on our radar for some time and, through the unfortunate set of circumstances which we don’t need to dwell on, we have found ourselves able to offer him this opportunity to drive for us at Long Beach. For the moment it’s just a one-off, and we’ll have to see how things progress from there.”
