Buemi, Di Grassi fight for the Formula E title

July 28, 2017

It’s the championship showdown for the FIA Formula E series in Montreal, Canada, and Renault e.Dams’ Sebastien Buemi and ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport’s Lucas Di Grassi are both fighting for the Formula E title.

Also mathematically in contention are Mahindra Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist and DS Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird. However, their chances of taking home the crown are slim, and, in a press conference before the weekend started, both drivers said they expected Buemi to take the title.

Just 10 points separate Buemi and Di Grassi at the top of the standings. Buemi’s lead was cut significantly after missing the previous race weekend in New York City to race the World Endurance Championship’s Six Hours of Nurburgring. Di Grassi seized the opportunity, making up 22 points during the two-race weekend, giving him 147 to Buemi’s 157.

Rosenqvist sits third with 104 points, and Bird in fourth with an even 100.

Bird’s stellar New York ePrix weekend, in which he won both races and scored a pole position, catapulted him into the championship fight. The result earned him more points in one weekend than he had accumulated in the previous eight rounds, combined.

However, despite the challengers, it’s still Buemi’s title to lose. The Swiss ace won the 2015/2016 title and seeks to defend this weekend in Montreal.

“It was very strange not to race in New York so I am very happy to go to Montreal and meet the team again to race for the season finale,” Buemi said.

“We still have a good chance to keep both our titles. Therefore, I will prepare for this weekend’s ePrix in a normal way.

“We will try to do the best we can. I hope we can finish this season on a high. I am really looking forward to it.”
