Brundle/Magnussen top morning warm-up
The son of an ex-Formula 1 driver and the father of a current Formula 1 driver topped the timesheets in the morning warm-up at Road Atlanta this morning – Alex Brundle and Jan Magnussen.
Brundle drove the Oak Racing Honda to the fastest time of the morning at 1:15.174 while Jan Magnussen was fastest in GTLM for Corvette Racing – recording a time of 1:19.389.
Brundle’s father Martin started 158 Grands Prix for Tyrrell, Zakspeed, Williams, Brabham, Benetton, Ligier, McLaren and Jordan and actually drove with Alex at Le Mans 2012.
Magnussen has 25 Formula 1 race starts to his credit with McLaren and Stewart but has gone on to become one of the most successful drivers in North American sportscar history.
His son Kevin is now starring in his debut season of Formula 1 for McLaren. The 22-year-old Kevin Magnussen will start tonight’s Japanese Grand Prix from from seventh on the grid.
Andy Meyrick was second fastest overall this morning ahead of Memo Rojas in the prototype class.
The GTLM battle actually featured the three cars that will battle for the driver’s championship. Magnussen’s teammate Antonio Garcia will fight it out today with the Dodge Viper duo of Jonathan Bomarito and Kuno Wittmer.
Other class leaders in the warm-up included Renger van der Zande in PC and the Porsche of Philipp Eng in GTD.
