Braun leads polesitters at CTMP

July 6, 2019

Colin Braun continued both his and CORE autosport’s weekend of pace at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Saturday qualifying ahead of Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix presented by Acura.

Braun was one of eight DPi drivers who broke his old track record in qualifying at the 2.254-mile Canadian Tire Motorsport Park circuit. The driver of the No. 54 Nissan DPi lapped the track in 1:05.452, as the fastest of five drivers in the 65-second bracket.

Nissan, Acura and Mazda drivers locked out the top five with all of their cars. The six Cadillac DPi-V.Rs will start from sixth on back.

It’s anticipated that Braun will shift to Jon Bennett to start. That would move the car to the back of class. Once Bennett completes the DPi class minimum drive time of 10 minutes, Braun would be free to take over.

OTHER CLASS POLES; HOW TO WATCH

BMW became the fourth different brand in as many GT Le Mans races to score pole position. Until today, it had been Corvette (Watkins Glen), Ford (Mid-Ohio) and Porsche (the first three races through Long Beach). Jesse Krohn uncorked a 1:13.086 in his No. 24 BMW Team RLL M8 GTE. That lap is also faster than the previous mark, set last year by Nick Tandy in a Porsche.

In GT Daytona, Robby Foley scored a pole he was able to keep in his No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3. Foley qualified fastest at Detroit but the car was sent to the rear of the field there following post-qualifying technical inspection. Alas, Foley made it stick on Saturday by qualifying ahead of Ben Keating’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 and the pair of Meyer Shank Acuras.

Kyle Masson captured the LMP2 class pole for Performance Tech Motorsports in its No. 38 Oreca 07.

Sunday’s race will go green just after 1 p.m. EDT. Live TV coverage has shifted from NBC to CNBC. Rain postponed the NASCAR Cup race in Daytona to Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT, and that race is now on NBC. IMSA Radio has live flag-to-flag radio coverage.
