Braun and Bruno do The Splits
Braun and Bruno do The Splits
If you missed the PC class finish at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, you missed a great high-speed case of the hunter and the hunted.
Former IndyCar star Bruno Junqueira was hustling to maintain the lead aboard his RocketSports Racing prototype.
Former sports car and young NASCAR star Colin Braun, in his first season with the CORE autosport team, was on fresher tires and in hot pursuit. Each was looking for his first win in the American Le Mans Series.
Two laps remained in the six-hour race as they reached the top of the famed Corkscrew and started the serpentine dive down the hill. A sole GT challenge class Porsche loomed ahead, trying desperately to stay out of the way. Suddenly, they were three wide. Junqueira quickly went to his right. Braun bravely went left and nosed ahead at the right-hander at turn 10A.
Junqueira tried to counter-attack, but ninety seconds later, Braun and his co-driver Jon Bennett had their respective first ALMS wins. Junqeira had a podium and fans had another Monterey memory.
