BMW Team RLL served notice on the GT Le Mans class that its BMW Z4 entries will be formidable contenders in Sunday’s Monterey Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The retro-liveried BMWs were first and second in the final one-hour practice session on Saturday morning.
Lucas Luhr posted the quickest time in the category in the black No. 24 BMW with a lap time of 1:22.591. Teammate Dirk Werner was just .086 seconds back in the white No. 25 BMW that swept the pole and the race in the preceding round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in Long Beach.
Patrick Pilet was the quickest of the GTLM Porsche contingent in the No. 911 Porsche RSR at 1:22.743, followed by the Corvette C7.Rs of Tommy Milner and Antonio Garcia. The spread from first to eighth in the fiercely competitive GTLM class was a scant .743 seconds.
The gap was considerably larger in the Prototype category as Ozz Negri put Michael Shank Racing’s Ligier/Honda P2 more than eight tenths of a second ahead of Richard Westbrook in the VisitFlorida.com Corvette DP. Negri posted the quickest time in all three practice sessions held on the scenic 2.2-mile circuit.
Third in the Prototype category was the Long Beach-winning Konica Minolta Corvette DP driven by Ricky and Jordan Taylor. The Ford EcoBoost Riley DP was fourth with Scott Pruett at the wheel.
Renger van der Zande’s enjoyed an advantage of more than a second over Chris Cumming in the Prototype Challenge class. Spencer Pumpelly was quickest in the GT Daytona category in Park Place Motorsports’ Porsche 911 GT America.
Qualifying for the Monterey Grand Prix is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. local time on Saturday. Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute race will be televised live on Fox Sports 1 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
