Bird wins NYC ePrix pole

July 16, 2017

Winner of the first round of the double header, Sam Bird started today where he finished yesterday’s FIA Formula E NYC ePrix – at the front of the field.

The DS Virgin Racing driver topped the morning practice session and followed that up with a pole position, setting a time of 1:02.285.

Second place honors went to Mahindra Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist. The swedish ace turned a lap in the Super Pole shootout just 0.037 of a second slower than Bird.

Yesterday’s second place finishes, Jean-Eric Vergne, qualified third, ahead of Renault e.Dam’s Pierre Gasly. Gasly, filling in for championship leader Sebastien Buemi while Buemi is racing the Six Hours of Nurburgring in the FIA World Endurance Championship, set the fastest time in group qualifying giving him a chance at pole position in his debut race. However, a wiggle at the hairpin cost him and the Frenchman could manage just fourth on the grid.

Fifth place on the grid went to Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld. Heidfeld will be looking for redemption in this afternoon’s race after a broken suspension forced him out of yesterday’s inaugural New York City ePrix on the streets of Brooklyn.

Not making the top five Super Pole shootout was Lucas Di Grassi—starting ninth. Di Grassi will be looking to make up every point possible while his championship rival Sebastien Buemi is away. Yesterday’s fourth place finish cut Buemi’s lead from 32 to 20, but with only three races left, Di Grassi is running out of chances.

The FIA Formula E cars return to racing on the streets of New York City for the second race of the NYC ePrix weekend at 1:00 PM ET. The race will be shown LIVE on Fox beginning at 12:30 and on Fox Sports Go with authentication.
