Big crash for Dumas in Audi

October 1, 2011

Wth 250 miles to go, Audi’s chances of a race win were smashed into the Road Atlanta wall with 98 laps remaining while Romain Dumas and Peugeot’s Franck Montagny were battling for the lead.

Dumas got a run on Montagny exiting turn 7 and tried to drive past a GTC Porsche as Montagny moved to protect his lead.

Dumas made contact with the GTC Porsche and spun across its nose into the wall.

Opinions were divided – Audi’s Dr Ulrich laid blame firmly on Montagny on ESPN3, while Montagy defended his position.

The end result is one badly damaged Audi and a Peugeot with a three lap lead with only 250 miles to go.

While Christophe Bouchut and Level 5 Motorsport continued to lead LMP2, the LMPC championship battle continued to swing wildly back and forth between Genoa Racing’s Eric Lux and CORE autosport’s Gunnar Jeannette and Ricardo Gonzalez.

While Ryan Lewis continued to lead the class in the PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports car – off track excusions and visits to the paddock between the Genoa machine and the CORE autosport cars kept the championship battle alive.

At three-quarter race distance. Jeannette and Gonzalez hold a two points lead over Lux. However, if they drop from third to fourth, the title falls back into Lux’s hands.

If Lux’s Genoa car can move from fifth to fourth (with CORE in third) – the championship will be a tie.

GT Polesitter Gimmi Brunni continued the “clockwork” performance of the AF Corse Ferrari entry.  The 458 Italia heads ALMS GT co-champion Joey Hand with the lead Flying Lizard Porsche in third.
