Sometimes it is better to be late than never arrive. That was the case for Drayson Racing driver Emanuele Pirro, who received a last-minute call to drive the Lola Judd Coupe in this weekend’s American Le Mans Series race at Utah, deputizing for injured team owner and driver Paul Drayson.

The ebullient Italian set the fastest time in Friday’s two-hour promoter test session at Miller Motorsports Park. Pirro lapped the 3.048-mile, 15 turn permanent road course in 1:36.295. Chris Dyson in the newly-livered Castrol Dyson Racing Lola Mazda Coupe was second at 1:36.748 and Jon Field in the Intersport Lola AER came third at 1:36.909.

In GT, Risi Competizione paced the highly competitive class with both of their Ferrari F430 GTs. Jaime Melo set the bar at a 1:47.442 ahead of Toni Vilander at 1:48.315. While Melo and Gianmaria Bruni anchor Risi’s full-season efforts, Vilander and Giancarlo Fisichella make their season debut in the second Ferrari this weekend. Vilander contested a handful of events in 2006 for Risi while Fisichella is set to make his first ever ALMS start. The No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche of Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long was third on the timesheets.

Gunnar Jeannette (LMPC) and Bryce Miller (GTC) led the Challenge classes. While this marks the one-year anniversary of the GTC class debut in ALMS, this is the first LMPC race at Miller.
