Battling the cold at Daytona
With temperatures struggling to top 50 degrees (F) at Daytona International Speedway for the Roar Before the 24, many people in the paddock are certainly complaining but BMW’s Joey Hand is reluctantly happy about the weather.
The BMW ace believes the lessons learned from the cool temperatures are going to be extremely valuable throughout the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
“It’s definitely cold out here and I am one of the guys complaining about it as my ears are frozen. I don’t think it’s a bad thing because we need to test in these conditions,” Hand said.
“A lot of us haven’t been here with these cars and these tires so we want to see what everything will do in these conditions. Even if it is warm during the day at Daytona, the night time temps can be as cold as this.
“You have to figure out how to get the car out of pit land, you have to work on the tire warm-up process. I got to do a a few laps already and I’m still learning.”
Hand will line up in the black No.55 BMW alongside Bill Auberlen, Andy Priaulx and Maxime Martin at the Rolex 24. He also will continue to drive for BMW in the DTM in Europe in 2014.
The No.56 white BMW will be driven by John Edwards, Dirk Mueller, Dirk Werner and Graham Rahal at the Rolex.
