Audi rolling into Le Mans on a high

AUTO - WEC 6 HOURS OF SPA 2015Porsche may have won the final race of the 2014 championship, Toyota won the title but after two wins in the opening races of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship, Audi will enter this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours as favorites.

Yesterday at Spa-Francorchamps Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler took their second consecutive win. The driver’s of the No.7 Audi were also triumphant at the opening round of the championship at Silverstone.

AUTO - WEC 6 HOURS OF SPA 2015In his last stint Treluyer had to fight Neel Jani in the No.18 Porsche 919 all the way to the checkered flag. At the last stop for the No.7 R18, Audi elected to triple stint his Michelin tires and the Frenchman was able to put that time saved to good advantage with a 13 second lead at the checkered flag.

“When they told me that I was going to keep the tires for a third stint at the end, I thought, oh no!” Treluyer said.

“But this was our chance to win and I was still able to take risks in traffic and push like hell. We did it and I am very happy for the team because we had a really strong weekend and it feels great to win in this fashion.”

Lotterer, Treluyer and Fassler now hold a 14 point gap leading into Le Mans where double points are on offer on the in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

In LM P2 the Jota Sport team beat the FIA WEC regulars with Simon Dolan, GP2 racer Mitch Evans and Nissan LM P1 ace Harry Tincknell taking the win.

Dolan, Tincknell and Audi driver Felipe Albuquerque are contesting the entire European Le Mans Series but also took in the Spa WEC weekend to prepare for Le Mans.

In the GTE classes, Aston Martin took both the PRO and AM Fernando Rees, Alex MacDowell and Richie Stanaway was victorious in the PRO class while Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda took the AM.

The next race in the FIA WEC is the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Teams will converge on Circuit de la Sarthe for the annual test day on May 31 before tackling the 24 hour class on June 13 and 14.
