Abt takes Mexico E-Prix win
Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Daniel Abt has finally earned his elusive first ABB FIA Formula E Championship victory.
The German captured today’s Round 5 at the Mexico City E-Prix, for what looks like his first win that will stick in the championship.
Abt won Round 2 at Hong Kong on the road, but was later disqualified due to a bar code mismatch discovered in post-race technical inspection.
On that day, Mahindra driver Felix Rosenqvist inherited the victory, while today in Mexico, Abt capitalized on Rosenqvist’s demise.
Rosenqvist led away from the pole position, but lost his win chances on Lap 14.
His car seized up with what was termed a “systems error” at the final Peraltada corner of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.
The Swede restarted, but lost any and all hopes of a good result in the fifth race of the season.

A system error out on track puts @FRosenqvist down to 19th position, but its Felix, he'll be back. #MexicoCityEPrix

This promoted NIO’s Oliver Turvey to the lead, which meant the Englishman has now led in all three Mexico City E-Prixs to date. Oddly, he hasn’t led at any other circuit.
Turvey’s lead was short-lived though. Following the pit stop sequence and car change, Abt moved into the lead.
Abt ran fourth early behind Rosenqvist, Turvey and Renault e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi, but got around Buemi on track before the stops. He then gained another position as a result of Rosenqvist’s stopping on track.

Behind Abt, Turvey fell into second, while Buemi got past Jean-Eric Vergne (Techeetah) for third on Lap 28 using FanBoost.
They ran that way to the flag, with Abt ending both his and Audi Sport’s frustrating start to the 2017-’18 campaign. Turvey in second secured his first Formula E podium, and Buemi rounded out the top-three finishers with his third straight podium result.
The series has a week off before resuming with Round 6 at Punta del Este, Uruguay on March 17. That marks the halfway point of this season’s championship.
