Held annually near Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s premier endurance sports car race.
Le Mans celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2013.
The first Le Mans race was held in 1923. The race was won by Andre’ Lagache and Rene’ Leonard of France driving a Chenard et Walcker Sport fitted with MICHELIN® tires. They completed the race at an average speed of more than 90 kph (55 mph) around the original 17 km (10 mi) circuit.
- The winners of that first race in 1923 covered 2209 kilometers (1,372 miles). The 2010 race winning Peugeot set a new Le Mans record, covering 5,411 kilometers (3,362 miles) in the 24 Hour race.
